Team News 2008-09 |
| Two young seacoast polo players and former
members of the Seacoast Interscholastic Team are now playing on varsity college polo teams
as freshmen. Seacoast Polo is very proud of the accomplishments of Brittany Cox of
Lee, NH and Nathan Berube of Northwood, NH. Brittany is a member of the Cornell
University Women's Polo Team. She was chosen from a very large field of contenders
to be included on the Varsity Team. Nathan is a starter for the University of
Connecticut's Men's Polo Team. Both players are well experienced, having competed in
Interscholastic Polo for several years, and can look forward to a full four years of
Intercollegiate Polo. Way to go Brit and Nate! |

Team News |
| The 2008-09 Interscholastic Tournament season
has been a very busy one for Seacoast Polo. In addition to hosting several teams at
Greenacres Stable in Madbury, NH the Team traveled to several other locations in
Connecticut for pre-season scrimmages. Seacoast Women's Team competed in the North East
Regionals at Yale University February 17-19, 2008. Brittany Cox, Kaeli McPhee and
Maia Griswold played two games and finished fourth in the region. The winner from
each region continues on the the Women's National Interscholastic tournament. The
Men's Team; Nathan Berube, Emerson Bilideau and Lester Bartholemy competed at Yale in the
Men's North East Interscholastic Tournament March 26-29. They had an outstanding
performance against the Toronto Team who went on to win the Nationals. |
|
| July '08 This is the second year that young
members of Seacoast enjoyed a polo adventure at Brandywine Polo Club in Pennsylvania.
Five members of the Interscholastic Team traveled with horses, parents and their
coach Steve Berube, to spend a fun-filled polo-packed four days at the Brandywine club.
Maia Griswold and Brit Cox of Lee, Kaeli McPhee of Durham, Nate Berube of
Northwood, and Emerson Bilideau of Epping participated in the July'08 Polo-Fest to enhance
their polo playing skills in anticipation of the Interscholastic Tournament. This
polo event is co-sponsored by the Polo Training Foundation (PTF) and provides young
players with on and off the field instruction, team building and polo skills. Most
participants camp-out at the club and enjoy food, fun and commraderie while not playing.
The days are filled with lectures, equine management chores and competitive
matches. |

| Polo Player's
Edition magazine's Maltese Cat award is given to recognize
outstanding performance by a polo school horse. As featured in the magazine's October
'05 issue, the award for 2005 went to a Seacoast Polo pony named Casper, owned for the
past few years by the Cox family and residing at their Tuckaway Farm. To be considered for
the award, Casper's story had been written and submitted to Polo Player's
Edition by Seacoast member Mary Guaraldi. And it's little wonder that Casper
won, as his story was so well told. It would be a shame not to share it with horse lovers
everywhere, so here it is: |

|
| Casper, the Little Horse that Could -- by Mary Guaraldi |
| Everyone has a
"little-horse-that-could" story but this is a story about a little horse that
could and still does after 30-some-odd years. His name is Casper and hes one of the
favorite ponies among kids and beginning adults alike at Seacoast Polo in New Hampshire.
Seacoast Polo has several great school-horse-type ponies and Id like them all to get
an award for putting up with us beginning players, but Casper has the distinction of
having done it for more years than many of our players have been alive. One day, when my
daughter (a formerly timid rider) was climbing up on his back, I asked his owner how old
he was and the response was "pushing 40." As I watched them gallop away, diving
right into the play, I knew right then he was the perfect candidate for the Maltese Cat
award....(more) |

| Speaking of Polo Player's Edition -- in
the "USPA Bulletin" section of the magazine's May 2006 issue, USPAŽ
Chairman Jack Shelton focuses on the recent growth of women's polo and applauds the
inclusion of women as good for the sport. Women now represent almost 28% of USPA
membership and continue to be the fastest growing segment. This is great news for women as
well as for the sport of polo, and it reminds us of an article published several years ago
(1998) by Seacoast Polo's Jan Frisselle. Although the statistics have evolved since
then, the rest of the story is still quite relevant, so we'll publish it again here: |
|
| Women: Play Polo -- by Jan Frisselle |
| Organized
womens polo improves competitive team skills for women polo players and affords
opportunities for team-play experiences not readily available to women in the co-ed
setting...(more) |
